Night Receptionist: The Hotel, Wardrobe, and Dynamic Backstories
Development of the story-driven DLC Night Receptionist is ongoing, and today we’d like to take a closer look at a few of the systems we’re working on: the hotel locations, the characters’ wardrobes, and dynamic backstories.
The Night Shift Begins
One of the DLC’s main locations will be the front desk.
This is where the protagonist spends most of their shift. From here, they’ll be able to answer guest calls, monitor what’s happening in the hotel via the CCTV system, and receive information that can trigger new events and encounters.
However, something is clearly wrong with one of the cameras.
Why isn’t Camera No. 6 working? That’s something you’ll have to figure out.
Exploring the Hotel
The lobby will serve as the main hub for Night Receptionist.
From here, the player will be able to move between different parts of the hotel:
- rooms;
- the suite;
- the restaurant;
- the boiler room;
- the pool.
Although Night Receptionist will feature a more compact story, we want the hotel itself to feel like a fully realized place with its own atmosphere, events, and moments of tension.
Outfit Store and Character Wardrobes
The DLC will also feature a character customization system.
Players will be able to access the outfit store via the main character’s laptop. We’re currently considering several options for navigating the interface, but the basic principle will remain the same: the player selects a character and opens their collection of available outfits.
Each heroine will have her own wardrobe, including standard outfits as well as rarer options that can be unlocked as you progress through the game or by meeting certain conditions.
In the outfit gallery, the player will be able to see:
- price;
- rarity;
- unlock conditions;
- the option to purchase and equip an outfit immediately;
- information about which outfit is currently being worn.
If additional conditions must be met to obtain an outfit, corresponding icons and tooltips will appear next to it.
Before purchasing an outfit, players will be able to view it in an enlarged preview window.
Some outfits will also feature additional color variations that can be purchased with in-game currency.
However, not all outfits will need to be purchased. Some can be obtained by progressing through the story, earning achievements, participating in side activities, and completing other in-game milestones.
When a new outfit becomes available, the player will receive a notification.
Dynamic Character Biographies
The wardrobe system will be linked to yet another new feature: dynamic character biographies.
Instead of a single static biography, character profiles will be gradually updated as the story progresses.
As the protagonist spends time with the characters, participates in important events, and develops relationships, the information in their profiles will change to reflect the current stage of the story.
You’ll be able to access the biographies through the wardrobe interface.
Currently, the system includes profiles for the following characters:
- Lo;
- Lu;
- Kiko;
- Michelle;
- Madonna;
- Chloe;
- Greta;
- Jeremiah.
Characters the player hasn’t met yet will remain hidden. Instead of a profile, a silhouette with a question mark will be displayed.
Biographies will be automatically updated after major plot developments. Updates occur at the start of a new day to ensure the information reflects the latest events in the story.
If new information appears in a biography, the game will notify you via the notification system.
Indicators will appear on your smartphone, laptop, in the wardrobe menu, and next to the corresponding character. Additionally, a pop-up notification similar to an incoming message will appear on the screen.
After viewing the updated biography, all related notifications will disappear.
We want these systems to help you better navigate the story, keep track of your relationships with characters, and at the same time provide more opportunities for customization.
Development of Night Receptionist is ongoing, and there’s still a lot more to come.
